OVERVIEW: The Stingray Mod 1 is a lightweight, air- and ship-launched anti-submarine torpedo developed by the United Kingdom as a mid-life upgrade of the Mod 0. It features a digital guidance system, enhanced acoustic seeker, and improved shallow-water and countermeasure performance.

DETAILS: The Stingray Mod 1 was developed by BAE Systems to replace and upgrade the existing Mod 0 units, entering service with the Royal Navy in 2006. It retains the same physical dimensions (324 mm diameter) and launch compatibility but features fully digital electronics, including an updated acoustic seeker, improved signal processing, and reprogrammable software. Propelled by a seawater-activated magnesium/silver-chloride battery powering an electric pump-jet motor, it is designed for high agility and low acoustic signature. The Mod 1 introduced better performance in shallow and littoral waters, more effective decoy rejection, and lower through-life costs due to its modular design.

Compared to Mod 0, Stingray Mod 1 provides better target discrimination, improved autonomy, and easier integration with modern aircraft and ship combat systems. It remains the UK’s principal lightweight ASW torpedo.

FUNCTION: Deployed from helicopters, aircraft, or surface ships, the Stingray Mod 1 enters the water and uses its high-frequency active acoustic seeker to detect and engage enemy submarines. Its digital guidance system enables real-time target tracking and counter-countermeasure behavior for precise terminal homing.
